When setting up the router for the first time, the general procedure is to make a physical connection, connect the WAN port of the router to the ADSL MODEM, and connect a LAN port of the router to a computer for setting up. Then set the computer to automatically obtain the IP address, and then enter the settings page with the router’s default management IP.
However, sometimes there will be such a situation, the computer has obtained the IP address from the router, but cannot enter the router’s settings page, repeatedly check the connection between the devices, and there is nothing wrong with this, what is the reason? The following is an example of WGR614v5/WGR614v6/WPN824:
There are several reasons for this to happen:
- ADSL MODEM has the routing function enabled and the LAN IP address is the same as the router’s LAN IP address.
The default LAN IP of WGR614v5 is 192.168.1.1. Many manufacturers who produce ADSL MODEM also use this value as the default LAN IP of the product. As a result, once the two devices are connected together, a loop will occur and the computer will still be able to The router obtains the IP address. You can use the ‘ipconfig command’ in the DOS command line window to view the obtained IP information, but you cannot ping the router.
Since the vast majority of users use the computer to dial-up directly before using the router, the value of the LAN IP of the ADSL MODEM does not affect at this time, so users often suspect that the router is faulty, but it is not. After the loop occurs, even if the router is disconnected from the ADSL MODEM, only the connection between the router and the computer is kept, the computer still cannot ping the router, the router needs to be restarted, and even the factory default value is restored.
The reset process of the WGR614v5 is, pressing the ‘Reset’ button for 15 seconds, then turning off the router followed by turning it on. Now, the router can only be connected to the computer, and can no longer connect to the MODEM. Then you can use two DOS commands ‘ipconfig / release’ and ‘ipconfig / renew’ to refresh the computer’s IP information.
After obtaining a new IP address, you can use ping to check it. Once the router can be pinged, the connection between the computer and the router is normal.
Then, launch the browser, enter http://192.168.1.1/basicsetting.htm in the address bar and press Enter to enter the router’s configuration interface. The default is to enter the basic settings page. ADSL home users usually only need to be here. Set the ADSL account and password on the page, as shown in the figure.
Remember that the router will eventually connect to the MODEM to access the Internet. At this time, the IP addresses of the two are still the same, so you must change the LAN IP of one of them. Changing the LAN IP of WGR614v5 is very simple. After setting the basic settings page, click the LAN IP setting of the function list on the left. Here, change the LAN IP of the router to 192.168.2.1, and change the range of address allocation to 192.168.2.2~ 192.168.2.51.
After the router’s update setting is completed, use the ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew DOS commands described above to update the IP information of the computer. If the computer obtains the correct IP (i.e., 192.168.2.×), the router settings are set. It has taken effect and can now be connected to the ADSL MODEM. Finally, enter the basic settings page of the router, click “Apply”, the router will dial.
Similarly, if the router is not connected to ADSL MODEM, but other devices, as long as the IP addresses are the same, the above problem will occur. Therefore, when setting WGR614v5 for the first time, first determine the IP of other devices. If you are not sure, do not use it. The WAN port is connected to other devices, and only one computer is connected to one of the LAN ports. For details, see the document “Quick Installation of WGR614v5”.
- Browser settings are enabled for the proxy server or the current browser does not support, please switch to a different browser.
Different from the first case, at this time, pinging the router from the computer is open, but it is impossible to enter the router setting page. If you follow this description, you should first check the browser’s proxy settings, which are often caused by the agent: start a browser to open a web page, select Internet Options -> Network tab in the lower right of the Connections tab in the Tools menu. , disable the proxy server function:
- The computer has installed multiple network cards.
Some users use a computer with multiple network cards to set up the management router. If the unused network card is set incorrectly, it will cause the same consequences. Therefore, when setting up the router, in addition to the network card being used, it is better to use other network cards. Disabled, and then enabled after the router’s settings are completed.
